P.A.W.S. Anne Arundel County

Welcome to P.A.W.S. Anne Arundel County, Inc. (People & Animals Who Serve)

The Volunteer Process

P.A.W.S. seeks volunteers from the community with dogs (or cats!) who are social and have had some obedience training. However, we do not require perfect behavior; an animal who loves people and enjoys making new friends makes an ideal therapy pet! We also have volunteer opportunities for people without pets. Please click below for more information about the opportunities available.

You may click below for a link to our application and application instructions, or you may contact us and we will mail you an application. The application packet includes:

  • A welcome letter outlining volunteer responsibilities
  • A P.A.W.S. Volunteer Job Description
  • An application form
  • Minor consent forms for volunteers under age 18
  • Veterinary Record Certification Forms - to be completed prior to placement

The completed application packet and a $5.00 application fee can be sent back to the P.A.W.S. office, emailed, or brought to orientation.

Training and Orientation

Orientation lasts about an hour. We discuss how P.A.W.S. volunteering works, provide you with a list of visiting sites, and go over your questions.

***Please note that you do not bring your pet to orientation***

Site Selection

You select the site that you think best suits you (and your pet, if you are part of a pet therapy team) and is convenient for you, but we are always here to provide guidance.

Placement - First Visit

If you are volunteering with a pet, we will evaluate your pet's temperament at the site on your first visit. If you have any questions or concerns about the pet's temperament and/or behavior, we will evaluate your pet PRIOR to placement.  We will also tour the facility with you and introduce you to the site's Activity Director, staff, and residents.

Ongoing Contact

Volunteering with P.A.W.S. is a fun experience. We participate in community events throughout the year including in the park family days, dog walk-a-thons, college de-stress events and other activities. We send out monthly newsletters to keep volunteers up-to-date on current events and new volunteer opportunities and, most importantly, recognize our volunteers for everything they do to support the residents of Anne Arundel County.

Additionally, we are always here to support our volunteers with program modification, such as schedule adjustments or facility reassignment.
